Blast by Maoists brings NMDC mining to halt

Our Bureau

Hyderabad June 4. The public sector NMDC is losing about Rs 9 crore per day due to loss of production of about 60,000 tonnes per day in its Bastar mines, following a series of blasts by the Maoists.

According to a company press release here, the Maoists blasted three high-tension transmission towers near Narayanpur in Bastar Division on May 31. This has paralysed the production of iron ore in the NMDC mines at Bailadila.

The disruption has stopped iron ore movement from the Bailadila projects of NMDC to steel plants and pig iron plants around Raipur in Chhattisgarh. It has also affected supplies to major customers such as Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd, Essar, Ispat Industries Ltd and Vikram Ispat.

The NMDC release said it has severely affected the life of the common man since there has been no supply of water and electricity in the Township and other areas. The company, under the Union Steel Ministry, is extending all assistance to the State authorities to restore the power supply at the earliest.
