New Delhi June 4 On the eve of the World Environment Day, India's largest car manufacturer, Maruti Udyog Ltd announced that its total energy consumption per vehicle at its Gurgaon factory has come down by 26 per cent over the last six years. It also said that it has been able to reduce the power consumption by 31 per cent and water consumption by 63 per cent. The carbon dioxide emissions per vehicle (produced during manufacturing) have also come down by over 39 per cent in the last five years. The company said in a statement that this has been made possible by eliminating the use of water by introducing air-cooled condensers and closed cycle cooling towers in its compressed air plant. It has also reduced the consumption of raw paint to bring down the level of industrial waste. It has introduced equipment such as multi axis painting robot to increase the efficiency of paint transfer and reduce the raw paint consumption.
Solar energy
Further, MUL has also been taking measures to conserve energy by using the right size of machines and solar energy in the form of lamps and heaters.
Hyundai's measures
Hyundai Motors India Ltd too is taking environment friendly initiatives, through rainwater harvesting at its factory. The company treats the accumulated rainwater at its recycling and filter plant for factory consumption. Hyundai Motors now is in the process of installing its second water-recycling unit and in the next year expects that the water consumption of the factory would be entirely through this source. Further, the company claims that it does not discharge water from the factory since it is recycled and used again.
