Trade & Labour Unions Cochin Port move against lightning strikes V. Sajeev Kumar
Kochi June 5 The Cochin Port Trust is initiating steps to deal with lightning strikes. According to the Chairman, Mr N. Ramachandran, these strikes are often called by a small group of people in the unorganised sector, who have the ability to stop the entire port operations. "However, these workers do not have the backing of the recognised trade unions in the port as the management has good quality communication with all trade unions," he said. He added: "This is a matter of great concern to all of us and needs to be eradicated by taking strong action. We need to clean up the system in the larger interest of the port." He also said: "We have been able to stop substantial portion of the unethical practices in cargo handling and now we will be initiating strong measures to put an end to illegal strikes." There are some lacunae in the existing laws in dealing with such situations in the unorganised labour sector. Considering this, the port is seeking legal opinion to take action against those who hamper port operations and to prohibit them from resorting to strikes or obstructing others from working, he added. Mr Ramachandran also clarified that the workers employed in the port had not gone on any kind of strike in the last one-and-a-half years and that the port was maintaining good industrial relations with the workers.
