Congress retains Ullal Assembly seat

Mangalore June 5 The Congress party has retained the Ullal Assembly segment for which the by-election was conducted on June 2. The Congress candidate, Mr U.T. Khader, defeated the BJP candidate, Mr Chandrashekhar Uchchil, by 8,032 votes. While Mr Khader garnered 46,271 votes, Mr Uchchil was able to secure 38,239 votes.

The Janata Dal (Secular) candidate, Mr Aboobakker Natekal, got 6,217 votes, while the CPI(M) candidate, Mr Balakrishna Shetty, got 4,803 votes.

The lone independent candidate, Mr Bharatraj Shetty, garnered 1,196 votes.

Counting of votes was held in Mangalore on Tuesday.

The by-election for the Ullal Assembly constituency was necessitated following the death of the sitting MLA, U.T. Fareed.
