Opinion - Letters
Welcome action by apex court

The entire nation heaved a sigh of relief when the mob violence that caused large-scale death and destruction on the issue of caste reservation, was called off. The Gujjar leader, Kirori Singh Bainsla, apologized for the public inconvenience and trumpeted his victory, though the truce is temporary, as a committee has been appointed to give its recommendations.

Taking suo motu notice of the matter, the Supreme Court has issued a show cause notice to the Police Chiefs of the different States to file their affidavits. This is a welcome step. The perpetrators of violence should be dealt with an iron fist so that it acts as a deterrent in future.

The Central and State governments have been promising the moon to the underprivileged, and more and more economically weaker castes and communities are trying to jump on to the `backward' bandwagon to reap the promised gains. Besides, religion-based reservations have also been promised to the religious minorities. With a growing population, the reservation system will only become a huge millstone around the Government's neck. The faster it realises this, and abolishes all reservations, the better for the nation.
