While JNNURM will invest 35 per cent of the total project cost, the remaining 65 per cent will be invested by KMC and the State Government jointly.
Kolkata June 6 Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) in association with the West Bengal Government and Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) plans to invest Rs 500 crore for desilting and structural rehabilitation of drainage and sewerage system in the city, according to Mr Nilangshu Bhusan Basu, Chief Municipal Engineer (Planning & Development) and Principal Chief Engineer (Civil), KMC. "Desilting is a capital-intensive project. We will get financial assistance from JNNURM and the State Government for desilting and structural rehabilitation of the drains and sewerage system in the city," Mr Basu told Business Line. While JNNURM will invest 35 per cent of the total project cost, the remaining 65 per cent will be invested by KMC and the State Government jointly. According to Mr Basu, "another Rs 1,000 crore is in the pipeline" to improve the drainage system. KMC is also mulling the possibility of amending the existing "building rules" to include rainwater harvesting and wastewater recycling in high-rise buildings and large complexes. The municipality is hopeful that the relevant laws would be amended by the end of the year. "The infrastructure cost to include waste water recycling is minimal, about 10-15 paise per litre. Besides hotels and commercial complexes, we also plan to mandate waste water recycling in large residential complexes," Mr Basu said.
