Sri Ramachandra varsity in pact for MRCP exam

Our Bureau

Chennai June 6 Sri Ramachandra University has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and Royal College of Physicians of London to establish a `MRCP Part 2 - Clinical examination' centre at its campus in Chennai. SRU is the first centre in South Asia where this exam would be conducted.

MRCP is a globally recognised rating that certifies specialist physicians. It is undertaken by candidates who have completed a five-year under graduate programmes in medicine (M.B.B.S) and those with postgraduate degrees in medicine (M.D).

The exam consists of two parts - theory and clinical exam (practical). In the past, candidates had to travel to the UK for taking up both the parts. The MRCP board later set up centres across the globe, including four in India, where candidates could undertake the theory exam.

However, the clinical exam was restricted to a few centres worldwide as it involved an examiner to evaluate the candidate as he treated a real patient. Communication skills, examining technique, problem assessment skills and diagnosis are some of the parameters for evaluation.

SRU has invested about Rs 7 crore to set up 25 `skill centres' at its premises, of which seven would be allocated for conducting the MRCP clinical exam, said Dr T.K. Parthasarathy, Pro Chancellor, SRU, said at a press conference here. These centres would have audio and video recording facilities and self-learning aids for students and doctors to update their skills and communication.

The MRCP examination board plans to examine 90 candidates a year at SRU, starting this November. A team of examiners and doctors from across the globe will train staff at SRU to conduct and evaluate candidates at the exam.

SRU plans to extend the scope of this MoU by facilitating student and faculty exchange with the colleges affiliated to the MRCP board.
