Education States - Tamil Nadu TNAU offers distance course in sugarcane tech Our Bureau
Coimbatore June 6 A two-year post-graduate course in sugarcane technology is being introduced this year under the open and distance learning (ODL) stream of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. The University's Directorate of ODL is offering this study programme in association with the Sugarcane Breeding Institute, an ICAR institution operating in Coimbatore. Candidates opting for the programme would undergo a total of 14 modules over four semesters. The subjects covered would include sugarcane breeding, production, protection technologies, crop and farming systems, tissue culture and sugarcane development and management. According to a TNAU communication, the targeted beneficiaries of the programme being launched this month would be personnel working in research stations, sugar factories and State Departments, besides those involved in public and private undertakings who aspire for a career in the area of sugarcane research and development. The TNAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr C. Ramasamy, who formally announced the launch of the ODL course, said the introduction of ODL in agri-related subjects was conceived with a view to enabling the agri population an access to formal agriculture education. Stating that the university would further strength the ODL programmes through increased collaboration with other institutions, Dr Ramasamy wanted the ODL Directorate to step up efforts to make the programme reach the needy as the subject is being introduced at a time when the sugar sector and its stakeholders were faced with problems. Dr N. Vijayan Nair, Director, Sugarcane Breeding Institutesaid new technology intervention was needed for the country to attain the projected sugarcane production of 400 million tonnes to produce the required 27 mt by 2020.
