Coconut & Copra States - Andhra Pradesh Copra procurement centres opened in East Godavari Our Bureau
Kakinada June 6 Nafed and the AP Oil Federation (Oilfed) opened four copra procurement centres in the Konaseema region of East Godavari district on Wednesday as a market intervention measure. This is the second time such an operation is being undertaken. Earlier, it was done in 2000, but there were complaints that middlemen, not the farmers, were reaping the benefit. Copra would be procured from the farmers at Rs 3,350 a quintal and each farmer would be allowed to sell only two bags of copra. The procurement centres were opened at Ambajipeta, Mummidivaram, Nagaram and Tatipaka villages. There were demands from local leaders and farmers that at least two or three more centres be opened to stabilise prices in the market. Mr G.V. Harsha Kumar, member of the Lok Sabha (Congress) from Amalapuram constituency, said he was happy that the Nafed and Oilfed had together opened the copra procurement centres, but said officials should strive to help farmers and that the procedures should be simplified. He said the Konaseema area in the district was the main coconut growing belt in the State and all steps should be taken to help farmers. Mr Brahmaji Rao, Manager of the AP Oilfed, urged farmers to process and grade the copra efficiently and bring in quality produce. He said there should be no compromise on quality.
