New Delhi, June 6

The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, is to convene a special meeting of the National Development Council to discuss issues relating to healthcare, disease control and public health.

Chairing a meeting held in the Capital on Wednesday to take stock of the implementation of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), Dr Singh urged all State Governments to pay adequate attention to healthcare issues and ensure efficient functioning of public health services.

He also called for greater investment in medical education, including nursing.

Dr A. Ramadoss, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, identified three categories of States according to their performance in implementing NHRM. Amongst the performers were Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Haryana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu and Tripura.

Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Punjab and Uttarkhand are among those States where implementation has been average.
