Tea CTC leaf, dust varieties witness good demand Our Bureau
Kolkata June 10 The CTC leaf and dust varieties in in Kolkata, Siliguri and Guwahati auction centres witnessed good demand with improved sorts selling dear, according to J. Thomas & Company Pvt Ltd, the tea auctioneers. The western Indian buyers increased their purchases with a major blender buying more actively than in the previous week. Darjeeling teas saw improved inquiry and better demand with prices following quality.
Orthodox
The orthodox market continued to be buoyant with prices ruling firm to dearer. There were good inquiries from the shippers to West Asia and CIS countries. The figures released by the Tea Board show all-India production in April at 65.3 million kg (mkg). It was up as compared to 56.4 mkg in the same month of the previous year.
PRODUCTION
However, cumulatively till April end, the total production at 152 mkg was lower than 154.3 mkg in the corresponding period of the last year. The climatic condition in the second fortnight of May having improved, the crop prospects have brightened.
INETRNATIONAL MARKETS
Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan market was buoyant and is expected to remain so. Reports said Sri Lanka and Pakistan have signed a Free Trade Agreement. Sri Lanka is likely to aggressively push its teas into Pakistan, whose tea trade size is estimated at $220 million.
