Shipping May sees record orders for boxes
A record 91 container vessels with a total capacity of 610,000 TEUs were ordered with the world's various shipyards in May alone. This was the highest container capacity ever ordered in a single month and equivalent of the capacity totalling 170 ships ordered in previous six months, says Shipping Gazette quoting figures compiled by ASX Alpha Line News. May's orders have expanded the global containership order book to an historic 5.25 million TEUs spread over 1339 new-builds. In fact, the number of vessels on order is equivalent to 51.8 per cent of today's world fleet with deliveries scheduled through early 2011. Of the vessels on order are 12 super Panamax containerships of the capacity ranging between 12,300 TEUs and 12,800 TEUs each, eight of which have been ordered by Peter Dohle and four by Lloyd Fond/ NSC Schiffart which has options to buy four more of these world's largest container ships, adds Shipping Gazette.
