Human Resources States - Tamil Nadu CII, Marg Constructions join hands for skills development Our Bureau
Manpower development The programme, the Grassroots Level Skill Development Initiative, aims to train 5,000 potential employees for industry. The State Government will be encouraged to replicate this scheme in other cities. Marg Constructions contributes Rs 1 crore to set up two training facilities, one in Sriperumbudur and the other at Cheyyur.
Chennai June 10 The Confederation of Indian Industry - Southern Region (CII) and Marg Constructions Ltd have agreed to set up a skill development programme that will prepare school dropouts and agriculture labour join industrial workforce. The CII sees this programme, dubbed the Grassroots Level Skill Development Initiative, aimed at training 5,000 potential employees for industry, as a proving ground for the Tamil Nadu Government and other State governments to expand to levels that would support industrial growth. According to Mr B. Santhanam, Chairman, Task Force on Skills, Employability and Affirmative Action, CII, the availability of skilled manpower is among the primary concerns and potential limiting factor for all major sectors of industry. Quoting from a skill gap study by the CII, he said that in Tamil Nadu alone over 130-150 lakh additional jobs would be generated over the next decade by the growth in industries such as automotive, light engineering, leather, textiles, electronics, information technology and construction. These will account for over 65 per cent of the additional manpower requirement. The skills development initiative seeks to address the issue of manpower shortage highlighted by the skill gap study. The industry was even now beginning to feel the shortage of manpower as investments drive growth. Over Rs 11,000 crore of FDI has come into Tamil Nadu in the last seven years. Karnataka too has attracted similar levels of investment and Andhra Pradesh nearly Rs 6,000 crore, he said at a press conference here on Saturday. To implement the training programme, Marg Constructions Ltd has contributed Rs 1 crore to set up two training facilities in Sriperumbudur, the industrial suburb of Chennai, and at Cheyyur, about 70 km from Chennai, near Mahabalipuram, where a special economic zone is planned. The people in Cheyyur have no employment options other than agriculture or have to migrate to urban centres. Together the institutes will train over 5,000 youth in pre-employment skills aimed at helping them gain qualifications to join training centres run by various industries.
