Rupee gains 34 paise on FII inflows

The rupee appreciated by 34 paise against the greenback beyond the psychological level of 41 on Monday, backed by strong FII inflows into the market. The domestic currency opened at 40.98/99 and saw an intra-day low of 41.04/05 before ending the day at 40.79/80 up from the previous close of 41.13. "It was a volatile market.

The rupee saw an intra-day low of 41.04/05 on speculation the central bank was buying dollars through the state run banks. The home currency also saw a high of 40.79 as a major corporate house was seen selling dollars," said a dealer with a private bank. Market participants expect the rupee to trade in the 41-41.1 range. In forwards, the six-month premia closed at 2.64 per cent (2.14 per cent) while the 12-month closed at 2.69 per cent (2.37 per cent).
