Chennai June 11 Taj Mahal Agro Industries Pvt Ltd today launched a low glycemic rice brand Moolgiri. The rice, said to be low in glycemic index, will be "a healthier choice" for diabetics. Glycemic index (GI) is the ability of a food to raise the blood glucose levels. It is more to do with the quality of carbohydrate than its quantity. So, rice with low GI is said to help people lose and control weight and increase the body's sensitivity to insulin, said Mr S. Chelliah, Chairman and Executive Director of the company. According to him, the Moolgiri rice is not a genetically modified variety. "The rice is processed in a particular way to lower its GI," explained Mr Chelliah. The company currently exports the product to Australia, New Zealand, Dubai and the US. Following its launch in India, the company plans to launch the product in the European Union, he said. The company has expanded its monthly production capacity from 3,000 to 7,000 tonnes and the first consignment to Europe would take place by the end of the month. The HACCP- accredited company has a network of contract farmers having more than 10,000 acres of land in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. Taj Majal Agro has also invested Rs 10 crore in a processing and packing unit to reduce human intervention in the process. The product was launched by the well-known agricultural scientist, Mr M.S. Swaminathan, at a press conference here. Priced at Rs 42 a kg, Moolgiri Rice will be made available in stores across the country.
