Former UPASI chief dead

The former President of the United Planters' Association of Southern India (UPASI), Mr M. Thangavelu, died in Tiruchi after a prolonged illness. He was 81. The Chairman of Havukal Group of estates in Kotagiri, he served as the President of UPASI in 1984-85.

He was Chairman of the Nilgiri Planters' Association (NPA) from 1971 to 73. He had also served as Chairman of Planters' Association of Tamil Nadu (PAT). He was a founder trustee of the NPA Centenary Charitable Trust. He had promoted the theme `Sympathy with action' during his tenure.His son, Mr. T. Jayaram, is the present Chairman of PAT.
