Satyam sees opportunities in software testing

`The growing area requires professionals with competency'

Hyderabad June 12 Given the huge market for software testing services globally, IT services provider Satyam Computer Services sees a big momentum towards offering this in the outsourced option.

It is estimated that software bugs cost the US economy $59.5 billion annually (about 0.6 per cent of it's GDP) and both users and developers end up paying for software bugs. Such high losses can be curtailed if companies invest in quality testing. The Chairman of Satyam Computer, Mr B. Ramalinga Raju, said the growing area of software testing required large number of professionals with competency in testing. Addressing participants at the `Test Drive-2007', a testing conference here, Mr Raju said the industry required over 18,000 testing professionals by 2007-end.

compliance issues

Regulatory compliance issues such as Basel-II, SoX, quality assurance and capability testing have become main drivers of growth of testing as a stream. Satyam's testing practice was initiated about 6 years ago and has more than 3,000 people and accounts for over 5 per cent of its global revenues.

According to experts at the testing event, complex software applications made by developers had to be thoroughly tested.

However, time constraints, skilled manpower shortage and development environment are among some of the key challenges faced by the industry.
