New hard disc drive from Seagate
Our Bureau
Bangalore, June 13
Watch out for the Barracuda 7200.10, Seagate's latest hard disk drive, which features 250 GB on a single disc. The hard disk packs in 180 Gbits of data per square inch using second-generation perpendicular magnetic recording technology. Perpendicular magnetic recording allows hard disks to achieve more areal density on as single drive. While older recording technologies such as longitudinal only allowed 100-200 GB of data to be stored per square inch, with perpendicular magnetic recording, data density of up to 1 Terabyte per square inch can be achieved. Other hard disk drive manufacturers have also announced such 1 Terabyte drives, but Seagate's 3.5-inch disk drive is small and may be cheaper, as it is on a single disc.
