Kolkata June 13 The Agri Horticultural Society of India (AHSI), with the active support of the Department of Food Processing Industries and Horticulture, Government of West Bengal, and in collaboration with the Indian Chamber of Commerce, is organising a three-day "Mango Mahotsav" here from June 15. The previous annual mango shows were held respectively in 2003, 2004 and 2005, and was skipped in 2006. The show, now back in 2007, is traditionally held in collaboration with the National Horticulture Board, Government of India and the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). Briefing newspersons here on Wednesday on the event, Mr Sanjeev Chopra, Secretary, FPI & H, Government of West Bengal, said the Mahotsav would have 66 sections for the mango fruit varieties and 31 sections for mango products, which would compete with each other. All districts in the State will participate in the competition. It is learnt that confirmations have been received for participation from some seven States already. In addition to the competitive sections, under five classes (two for mango varieties and three for home made and commercial products), there will be a display of mango menus by hotels, restaurants and confectioneries, both Indian and Continental, whose names will be allowed for publicity display. According to Mr Chopra, the key objective of the Mahotsav was to both popularise different varieties of Indian mangoes and mango products in India and abroad, and also provide an opportunity to the food processing industries to display and sell the products to a much wider market.
Workshop
The three-day event will also feature a full-day seminar and workshop on "Quality improvement of Mango for domestic and export requirement". Scientists and experts from agricultural universities across the country, National Horticulture Mission, New Delhi, APEDA, New Delhi and NHB, Gurgaon, are expected to participate. In addition to competition and exhibition, mangoes and mango products will be made available to visitors for purchase at the show arena.
