Higher volume of tea on offer at Coonoor sales

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor June 13 A sudden surge in the catalogues of the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) this week has taken the volume to five-month high. Catalogues of the various brokers add up to a volume of 9.4 lakh kg for Sale No: 24 to take place on Thursday and Friday. This is some 1.5 lakh kg more than the offer of last week.

Re-sale offered

The recent rains have caused some increase in the arrivals to the auctions. Teas that had remained unsold in the recent weeks are also offered for re-sale now.

For many weeks this year, the volume had remained low. Only in the first three weeks of January, the offer had been more. Since Sale No: 4 held on January 24, the volume had not gone above 9 lakh kg, except in Sale No: 13 held on March 28 when the offer totalled 10.28 lakh kg. Still, the volume is low compared with the same time of last year when 10.85 lakh kg had been offered for sale.

Popular Brands

Of the 9.4 lakh kg now on offer, as much as 6.32 lakh kg belong to the leaf category and 3.08 lakh kg, dust category.

Again, as much as 8.72 lakh kg belong to the CTC variety and only 0.68 lakh kg, the orthodox variety.

Last week, despite the volume remaining low, prices generally fell Rs 2 a kg .
