Mock drills on disaster management

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is planning to conduct 21 disaster management mock drills in the country during 2007-08. Brig. B.K. Khanna, Specialist (Training and Capacity Building) of NDMA, told this to presspersons after a chemical disaster mock drill here on Wednesday.

During the year, nine mock drills will be held on chemical disaster. Three such drills, including the one conducted in Mangalore, have been held so far. Apart from the three mock drills on chemical disaster, two mock drills on floods and one each on earthquake and cyclone have been conducted so far, he said.

Stating that the NDMA has released guidelines on tackling chemical disaster, he said such guidelines on floods and cyclones would be issued in three to four months. Earlier in the day, chemical disaster mock drill was held in the premises of Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd and New Mangalore Port Trust, and in the nearby villages of Thokur and Kenjar. Officials from the district administration and members of the Pune-based National Disaster Response Force took part in the mock drill.
