Mumbai, June 13

The rupee weakened by about 23 paise on dollar buying by importers. The home currency was also seen tracking the Japanese yen against the dollar. "The market does not expect any interest rate movement in Japan so the yen weakened against the greenback," said a dealer at a private bank.

The home currency opened at 40.86/89, touched an intra-day low of 41.08 and finally closed at 40.98, against the previous day's close of 40.75. "The RBI was not seen in the market," said the dealer. In forwards, the six-month premia closed at 3.23 per cent (2.95 per cent) and the 12-month ended at 3.01 per cent (2.84 per cent).
