Our Bureau

Pune June 13 General Motors India's second plant at Talegaon will be commissioned by the middle of 2008 and would manufacture a mini-car by the yearend, initially for the domestic market and later for the export market as well.

Disclosing that the initial installed capacity of the plant would be 1.4 lakh cars annually, Mr P. Balendran, Director and Vice-President Corporate Affairs, said this could be upped to 3 lakh in stages to meet market demands.

The present investment in the plant is around Rs 1,400 crore.

At the launch of the Optra Magnum diesel here on Wednesday, Mr Balendran said petrol versions of the Magnum with 1.6 and 1.8 litre power trains would follow next year, while an SUV (expected to be the Captiva) would be launched by the end of the year.

"We are committed to bringing out two new cars every year till 2010," he said.

Providing sales targets for the current calendar year, he said GM (I), which sold 36,000 units last year, expects to sell 66,000 units during 2007, mainly on the back of the newly introduced Spark and the Aveo U-VA.

These would comprise 20,000 units of the Spark, 22,000 units of the Tavera and the rest from the Optra and Aveo range, he elaborated.
