FICCI helping farmers get EurepGAP certification

Our Bureau

Mumbai June 14 Farmers wanting to export their fruits and vegetables to the lucrative European market but are daunted by the strict EU food norms, need not lose heart. Help is at hand from the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

The industry chamber is helping farmers get the EurepGAP certification, which will help them sell their produce in the EU market.

EurepGAP is a private sector body that sets up voluntary standards for the certification of agricultural products around the globe. Mr Alop K. Mittal, Advisor to FICCI, told Business Line the chamber has already helped 100 farmers get the EurepGAP certification and now wants to further increase the number to 2,000. It takes about Rs 1 lakh to train one farmer in good agriculture practice and the certification.

Since the introduction of EurepGAP certification in 2003, the horticulture exports from India to the EU have fallen.
