Agricultural Policy Agri-Biz & Commodities - Sugar States - Maharashtra Rs 240 cr allocated for interest subsidy to Maharashtra farmers Our Bureau
Pune June 14 The Maharashtra Government has made a budgetary allocation of Rs 240 crore this fiscal to subsidise the interest burden on agricultural loans to farmers, and has earmarked Rs 50 crore as relief package to farmers whose sugarcane will not be crushed this season. A proposal to give equity participation for sugar factories to introduce co-generation will also be brought before the Cabinet for consideration.
Sugar sector
Announcing a host of measures for the sugar sector, Mr Patangrao Kadam, Maharastra Minister for Co-operation, Relief and Rehabilitation, said that Rs 130 crore has been allocated as subsidy for loans that will be disbursed at a rate of 6 per cent. The remaining Rs 110 crore has been earmarked for loans of up to Rs 25,000 that will be given at an interest rate of 2 per cent to small farmers who are regular on repayments.
Fiat to factories
Stating that though 27 sugar factories have been instructed to continue crushing till June, around 10 lakh tonnes of cane in the Marathwada region will remain uncrushed, Mr Kadam said that district collectors would undertake surveys and submit a report in the next ten days. A relief package of Rs 25,000 per hectare will be given to affected farmers. Amongst the other measures that are on the cards is a proposal for sugar factories to start crushing by October 1 and increasing the number of factories from the present 163 to 175 during this year.
