The Union Ministry of Commerce has agreed to fund a new leather design development institute at the Bantala Calcutta Leather Complex (CLC) to the tune of Rs 10 crore. Urging the State Government to fully exploit the potential of CLC, Minister of State for Commerce Mr Jairam Ramesh said today that he was happy at the progress being made in relocating so many tanneries at CLC, said to be the largest such project in Asia.

The Minister added that five new leather clusters would be developed in Chennai, Agra, Nellore, Kanpur and West Bengal. Mr Ramesh said that the plan is to take the share of footwear, which accounted for a third of total leather exports in 2006-07 to 60 per cent by 2011.
