Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy

Srikakulam June 14 The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, today inaugurated the right main canal of the Vamsadhara project at Krishnapuram. "We are completing the task in spite of all the hurdles," he said.

The right main canal, covering a command area of 62,280 acres, would benefit farmers in 166 villages in the area.

While the left main canal was completed long ago, irrigating 1.48 lakh acres, the right main canal was delayed due to various reasons.

Works were taken up with Rs 37.15 crore from Nabard and Rs 86.81 crore under the Accelerated Irrigation Development Fund for the right canal.

The Chief Minister said that he was determined to make agriculture "a profitable proposition," adding that he would persist with his "pro-farmer policies."

Mr P. Lakshmaiah, Minister for Major Irrigation, said that the Government had provided additional irrigation facilities to more than 12 lakh acres.
