Pune June 15 Promotion of secondary cities, introduction of finishing schools in the secondary cities and business continuity process in Pune and Mumbai are key elements of the road map that has been drawn up to promote Maharashtra in the IT space. Speaking to newspersons, Mr P. Venugopal, Director, Maharashtra Software Technology Park of India, said that it had already identified Aurangabad, Nashik, Nagpur and Kolhapur as the next emerging destinations. The list would now include Solapur too, as many IT companies are showing interest, he said. He added that Datamatics Technology and Tricom India have already set shop in Nashik. The STPI is also looking at the prospects of setting up mobile finishing schools for the IT industry. He said that 60 per cent of the employable student community reportedly not up to the mark. The finishing school would look at honing the soft skills of employable youth. The other initiatives on the radar include Web hosting services in secondary cities, facilitating setting up of IT parks in these cities and introduction of broadband services. On the Pune industry growth trend in the IT and ITES segment, Mr Venugopal said that Pune accounted for 11 per cent of the units registered on an all-India basis. About 114 units have registered in Pune out of the approximately 1,000 units in the country. The investment for the next five years would be Rs 5,000 crore and the manpower requirement would be 50,000. He also said that exports from Pune had touched Rs 15,353 crore last year against Rs 9,100 crore in 2005-06, registering 68 per cent growth compared to 48 per cent in 2005-06. He added that 20 MNCs (19) and 94 Indian companies (99) had registered in Pune last year. The contribution to the national exports was 11 per cent (8.98 per cent). The top 20 companies contributed 60 per cent of the total exports while the top 100 companies' contribution was 91.52 per cent. Out of the 20 top IT services companies in India, 11 have presence in Pune and the trend has been prevailing for the past three years. Out of 15 top BPO companies, six have presence in Pune. And of the 100 players in global outsourcing, 16 have presence in Pune out of total of 27 in Maharashtra. Mr Venugopal also said that there are 100 IT parks in Pune registered with the State Government; the State has a total of 212 such parks registered. About 33 public IT parks are also present in the State which are under the MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) and CIDCO. During 2006-07, a total of 231 new units had registered in Maharashtra, with Pune accounting for 114, Mumbai 104, Nagpur eight, Nashik four and Kolhapur one. Total exports from the State amounted to Rs 27,525 crore (Rs 16,957 crores). The growth was 62.32 per cent (47 per cent). The growth in Pune was 68 per cent (48 per cent), while Mumbai saw 62 per cent growth (34 per cent). Mr Venugopal said the emerging opportunities the Pune IT industry could look at include IT services, re-engineering, embedded systems, e-commerce application, data entry and e-business operations.
