Gujarat Coop Milk Fed is now a billion-dollar body

Anand June 15 Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF) registered a 13.4 per cent growth with a turnover of Rs 4,277.84 crore in 2006-07 with Amul emerging as the world's largest pouched milk brand.

With this, GCMMF has emerged as a billion-dollar organisation, according to a release. During the year, the member unions of GCMMF decided to integrate liquid milk marketing operations in all districts of Gujarat under the common Amul brand.

Weather Conditions

Disclosing this at the 33rd Annual General Body Meeting held here, the GCMMF Chairman, Mr P.G. Bhatol, said the growth was impressive when viewed against the ban on exports of skimmed milk powder and the massive loss suffered by farmers due to the floods in Surat and other places last year. GCMMF is the apex marketing federation of 13 district milk unions of Gujarat with a membership of 26-lakh milk producers.

In spite of adverse weather conditions, the total milk procurement by the member unions during 2006-07 averaged 67.25 lakh kg per day representing a growth of 4.5 per cent over 64.38 lakh kg per day during 2005-06. The highest procurement was recorded during January 2007 at 84.09 lakh kg per day.

Flavoured Milk

Sale of Amul milk in pouches has grown by 40 per cent in value terms while sales of ghee in Amul and Sagar brands have grown by 28 per cent. With the launch of Amul Kool Café, sales in the flavoured milk saw an increase of 55 per cent while Amul continued its undisputed leadership in the ice-cream segment. Other products too have maintained their lead in their respective segments.

With the ban on export adversely affecting performance, the revenue of GCMMF from exports decreased from Rs 134 crore in 2005-06 to Rs 60 crore this year.

Since the ban in February this year, Mr Bhatol said, the international skimmed milk powder prices have increased from $3,000 per tonne to $5,000 per tonne, which meant the GCMMF members suffered an opportunity loss of $2,000 per tonne.
