ICMR setting up SubbaRow centre

G. Naga Sridhar

Dr SubbaRow (1895-1948), who went to the US in 1920, is known for `the Fiske-SubbaRow Method' for estimation of phosphorous in body fluids and tissues.

Hyderabad June 15 Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is setting up the Dr Yellapragada SubbaRow Centre in the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) here to preserve his works and to conduct follow-up research on the drug development leads provided by him.

Dr SubbaRow (1895-1948), who hailed from Bhimavaram in West Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh, went to the US in 1920 and is known for "the Fiske-SubbaRow Method'' for estimation of phosphorous in body fluids and tissues. He had also synthesised Folic Acid, Auroemycin, tetracycline antibiotics and Methotrexate.

"The Yellapragada SubbaRow Centre at NIN would preserve all the original works and collection of the celebrated scientist from Andhra. We plan to identify some subject experts to go through his personal notes and research to bring out an edited and researched version of the scientific works of Dr Subba Row," Dr Sasikeran, Director, National Institute of Nutrition told Business Line here.

Mr S.P.K. Gupta, the biographer of Dr SubbaRow, would hand over the entire information he had collected from Dr SubbaRow's family.

"We are planning to organise a two-day seminar in January 2008 on Dr SubbaRow. By that time, digitisation of his scientific works will also be completed," Dr Sasikeran said.

Archiving

NIN would take assistance from the Andhra Pradesh State Archives in preserving the collection of the eminent scientist. The archiving process would be completed by January 2008.

"The objective is to provide a source of inspiration for the young researchers by exposing them to the vast contribution of Dr SubbaRow in the short span of his life. His contributions in nutrition and drug discovery are unparallel and are still relevant to be researched further," he added.
