Spinning mills body registers wind energy project for carbon credit

The Dindigul-based Tamilnadu Spinning Mills Association (TASMA) has registered its combined wind energy project for carbon credit under the United Nation's clean development mechanism (CDM) programme.
A combined generation capacity of 472 MW has been registered with the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) on June 10.
The project comprising 704 windmills individually owned by TASMA members is expected to yield 6.86 lakh certified emission reduction (CER) equivalents in a year and 68.669 lakh CERs during the 10-year project active period — from January 1, 2003 to December 31, 2012, according to a communication from TASMA chief advisor, Mr K. Venkatachalam.
Swedish agency
The entire CER yield of the project would be bought over by Swedish Energy Agency through Carbon Asset Services Sweden AB and TASMA has already entered into a forward contract with the latter for the sale of CERs.
With the registration, TASMA is in the process of appointing a designated operational entity to monitor the project, and the first issue of CERs for the four-year period from January 1, 2003 to December 31, 2006 was likely by September this year.
TASMA has also launched its second bundled wind power project for a combined 345-MW capacity for the carbon credit which is expected to be registered by 2007-end, Mr Venkatachalam said.
