Logistics - Environment
Warmer countries, greener shippers?

Environmental legislation is one of the biggest challenges facing today's global logistics industry, according to Shipping Gazette, quoting a commentary in UK's Transport Intelligence news portal. Counting food miles to establish a " carbon footprint" may well have a devastating impact on shipping produce from poor to rich countries, says the unsigned editorial commentary.

Environmental campaigners are increasingly looking for carbon footprint to taint imported products as contributors to climate change concerns and pollution but the perishables produced in the northern, colder and developed regions need high levels of fertilisers and more energy to maintain warm temperatures in greenhouses, argues the editorial. Thus the produce from warmer countries is more competitive in terms of energy efficiency vis-à-vis rival produce from developed countries, observes the editorial.
