Environment Towards a Single European Sky
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has urged the German Chancellor, Ms Angela Merkel, who recently hosted the G-8 Summit, to make a political commitment to deliver a Single European Sky within five years to save annually 12 million tonnes of unnecessary CO2. "The single most important step we could take today to reduce aircraft emissions is to turn the dream of a Single European Sky into a reality within five years and this will be an example for G-8 partners to follow", said Mr Giovanni Bisignani, IATA's Director-General and CEO, in a letter to Ms Merkel. The letter came after IATA's annual general meeting and the World Air Transport Summit in Vancouver, Canada. A Single European Sky would effectively unite Europe's 35 air service providers into one. Such a consolidation, it is felt, would result in energy efficiency gains by reducing delays and making routings more rational.
