Housing for poor

The DLF IPO reflects the confidence of the people in the growth of the housing industry, aside from the company's strengths.

The editorial "New floor plan" (Business Line, June 18) explained how the real estate boom holds promise of rapid economic growth and stressed the need to dismantle entry barriers for the organised sector to build on.

Such a transformation should, however, also address the huge housing needs of the country's vast economically weaker sections.

Thee is no point only continuing to focus on those who can afford high-end homes.

The need of the poor for permanent, own shelter cannot be ignored any longer. It is thus time a percentage of the burgeoning housing finance funds was reserved for such families, by way of special schemes.
