Icrisat secures $2.4-m funding from World Bank

Our Bureau

Hyderabad June 19 The International Crops Research Institute for Semi Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) has been rated "Outstanding" for its performance in 2006 among 15 international agriculture centres under the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).

A rating of `outstanding' is the highest that is offered and entitles Icrisat for a funding support of $2.4 million during 2007 from the World Bank.

This rating is based on the results of the performance measurement system developed by the CGIAR and the World Bank. This takes into account how each of the CGIAR centres fared with regards to outputs, impact, quality and relevance of research, institutional and financial health and incorporates stakeholder perception.

Icrisat mandate is to improve agricultural productivity in semi-arid tropical areas of 48 countries in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

The Chair of the Icrisat Governing Board, Dr Simon Best, in a statement said this is great news and a well-deserved recognition for the hard work of the leadership and team Icrisat.

The Director General of Icrisat, Dr William D. Dar, said this achievement was possible due to the strategic guidance, judicious management and hard work of all members of team Icrisat both from Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. The alliance of the CGIAR centres is the largest network of public funded international agricultural research institutes that help increase agricultural productivity in developing countries aimed at reducing poverty.

The World Bank is among more than 60 donors who constitute the CGIAR. The Bank also hosts the CGIAR Secretariat at Washington DC.
