Trade & Labour Unions Govt urged to lift curbs in Bonus Act Our Bureau
Kochi June 19 In accordance with the call given by the Water Transport Workers Federation of India, the port and dockworkers at Kochi Port observed `National Day' on Tuesday to press their various demands. The National Day is being observed in all major ports based on the decision taken at the National General Council Meeting held in Kolkata last month. The workers at Kochi also held a demonstration and public meeting in the port area and called upon the Government to remove restrictions in the Bonus Act through issuance of an Ordinance so that all employees may become eligible for bonus without any restrictions based on monthly salary. Their other demands included protest action against advice of international consultants to convert the port organisation into a landlord model and for outsourcing all major activities of ports. They also opposed the Government's proposal for 10 years term for wage settlement as part of the directive from the Department of Public Enterprise and instead demanded implementation of a 5-year term for wage settlement. The workers also demanded filling up of all vacancies at entry-level posts by lifting the recruitment ban; enhancement of the retirement age from the present 58 to 60 and also protested against the Government's policy in allowing recruitment of foreign seafarers on board Indian ships.
