Chennai June 19 Sanmina-SCI, $11-billion US-based provider of electronic manufacturing services (EMS), will invest Rs 225 crore at Oragadam, near Chennai, to set up its largest manufacturing technology campus.

The new campus will offer end-to-end manufacturing services, including design and engineering and manufacturing, to large technology companies in Asia and in India. Some of its clients include Motorola, IBM and Nortel.

In the 100-acre campus in a designated special economic zone, Sanmina-SCI will manufacture products for the medical (such as X-ray machine components, kidney disease treatment tools), defence and aerospace sectors (communication equipment for aeroplanes).

The company would start with assembling printed circuit boards of various sizes.

Over time, the campus would become a full-fledged manufacturing unit, Mr Hari Pillai, President, Global EMS Operations, said at a press conference here today.

The new campus would be ready by July 2008 and employ around 1,500 people by then. In five years, about 10,000 persons would be employed there, he said.

Interim facility

The company has set up an `interim facility' at the Madras Export Process Zone and products from this factory would roll out from August. Its existing activities in Chennai such as engineering, supply chain management and IT services will be relocated to Oragadam.

The company has around 200 people in Chennai, said a company official.

Today, Sanmina-SCI signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu Government to set up the new campus.

The agreement was signed between Mr Pillai and the State Industries Secretary, Mr Shaktikanta Das, in the presence of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi.
