Hyderabad post office doubles as passport office

Our Bureau

Hyderabad June 20 In an effort to ease the pressure on the Passport Office, the Ministry of External Affairs has joined hands with the Department of Posts to virtually make the post office at Begumpet another passport office in the first attempt of this kind in the country.

"The idea is to take passport services to the doorsteps. Fresh applicants can now submit the duly filled up applications at the post office," Mr B. Bala Bhaskar, Regional Passport Officer (Andhra Pradesh), said.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, he said applicants need no longer wait in serpentine queues at the passport office.

Following a tie-up with the Passport Office, the DoP has opened a Common Service Centre (CSC) that can accept 500 applications a day between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

RENEWAL SERVICES

Asking people to use the services at CSC, Mr Bala Bhaskar said renewal services too would be started at the Centre.

"The fact that all the 349 applications we processed in the last few days were accepted by the Passport Office shows the quality of services we offer at these counters," Ms Yesodhara Menon, Chief Postmaster General, said.

At present, the DoP accepts passport applications at six post offices in the twin cities. "We forward all the applications to the passport office the same day for processing," she said.

The DoP's Andhra Pradesh circle registered revenues of Rs 175.14 crore, 113 per cent higher than the targeted revenues.
