BSNL's cable network

The news report that BSNL is slowly losing market share to private players (Business Line, June 18) is not surprising. The reasons are not far to seek and are well known. Little effort to reorganise itself and move with the times have hindered its progress. One area that needs particular attention is BSNL's extensive external telecommunication cables spanning the country. These were installed over a period of time using taxpayers' money and are to be treated as a national asset. BSNL should, therefore, hive off its cable network into a separate entity and share it with private telecom operators. As more and more people surrender their landlines and opt for mobile phones, the cable network will be under-utilised and become a dead asset. While they remain under-utilised by BSNL, the private operators need them to offer broadband and other services to their customers.
