`Collaborative effort needed for implementation'

TCS became first to issue over 2-lakh digital certificates in India.
Plans to hire 2,500 people this year.
To establish two campuses in Hyderabad.

Hyderabad June 21 Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on Wednesday stated that the company was in pursuit of at least four global request for proposals (RFPs) for electronic passport infrastructure.

With the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), represented by 188 members, standardising international travel documents and coming up with specifications of machine readable documents, TCS is in pursuit of some major contracts for e-passport systems.

However, the Executive Vice-President and Head of Advanced Technology Centre at TCS, Dr M. Vidyasagar, refrained to divulge the names of countries wherein TCS is bidding for these projects.

Addressing a press conference, Dr Vidyasagar said that electronic passports require a collaborative effort in implementation to make travel-related issues smooth, swift and easy. However, this called for setting up electronic card readers and related infrastructure.

Digital signatures

Earlier, the Advanced Technology Centre here headed by Dr Vidyasagar announced that they became the first Certifying Authority (CA) in the country to issue 2-lakh plus digital signatures, of the 5-lakh issued thus far in the country.

TCS's Certifying Authority has shown good growth during the past year due to Government initiatives such as the MCA-21 programme, which accounted for about 1,50,000 signatures.

The Regional Head of TCS, Mr V. Rajanna, said products like digital signatures developed at TCS Hyderabad, show the nature and scope of engagement of researchers in global projects. The Advanced Technology Centre is complimented by the Business Systems and Cybernetics centre, and both of these are growing.

Hire plan

Referring to TCS's Hyderabad operations, Mr Rajanna said that they now employ about 5,200 people across centres, and plan to induct about 2,500 more during the year. Thus far, TCS has recruited about 1,400 students from 21 campuses and plans to hire from 12 more campuses shortly.

As a part of its growth plans, it is proposed to establish two campuses in Hyderabad. While the first would be ready later this year, work on the second campus, to come up in a 70-acre site, would be initiated later this year.
