Initiatives for acquiring cross-disciplinary skills

Bangalore June 21 Service science, which aims to bring together ongoing work in fields computer science, operations research, industrial research, management sciences and social and legal sciences, will drive productivity, quality and innovation in large organisations.

At the first India Service Science, Management and Engineering (SSME) conference held in Bangalore today, IBM announced collaborative initiatives with business and tech schools in the country.

These include SP Jain Institute of Management and Research, Nirma Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and the National Institute of Design.

The initiatives draw on research and teaching in the fields of computer science, business strategy and management sciences to help students develop the skills required in a tech-based services-led economy.

Speaking at the conference, Dr C. Mohan, IBM Fellow and Chief Scientist, IBM India said that the new initiatives would prepare graduate students for careers in the evolving multidisciplinary field of service management.

Many leading Universities across the world have begun working in the area to develop these cross-disciplinary skills.

Prof Shankar Sastry, Director, Centre for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS), University of Berkeley, California, said that technology and information are critical to services delivery and they directly impact the ability of corporates to compete and innovate.

IBM has also tied up with the ISB and is partnering with IIM-B, IITs and the IISc to promote SSME research in the country.
