WTO sets up panel on India's wine duties

US presses its case successfully

New Delhi June 21 The US has succeeded in dragging India to the dispute settlement body of the WTO on the issue of additional and extra-additional duties on imports of wine imposed by India.

The WTO announced the establishment of a panel on Wednesday in Geneva at the second time request by the US after its failure in the first time last month when India blocked the move.

The US said that it believes additional duties and extra additional duties imposed by India remain in excess of those listed in India's WTO Tariff Schedule.

The US referred an analogous case involving India and the European Commission (EC) and sought the merger of both the cases to be heard together.

In its defence, New Delhi said that both India and the US had constructive and fruitful consultations and agreed to work towards a mutually acceptable solution, which India still believed was feasible.

India continues to consider the US request for a panel as premature and is confident that the panel would rule in its favour.

India also said that it would consider the appropriateness of the US proposal to merge the two cases into one and would revert on this matter separately.

However, the EC has no objections if the two cases are merged and taken up.
