New Products & Services Natco Pharma launches oral contraceptive Our Bureau
Hyderabad June 22 Hyderabad-based Natco Pharma Ltd has forayed into the oral contraceptive segment with the launch of `Tarana', the first generic version of Yasmine, an international brand from Bayer's. "The foray into the contraceptive segment is in line with Natco's strategy to be a complete pharmaceutical company. Tarana is the first of over 10 products in the pipeline in the non-oncology and speciality segments," Mr P. Bhaskara Narayana, Vice-President (Finance), Natco, told newspersons here. Tarana contains Drospirenone 3 mg and Ethinyl Estradiol 0.03 mg, as opposed to progestin contained in traditional oral contraceptives for women. "It has been proved by the parent version of the drug that there will be no commonly-feared side-effects such as wait-gain, bloating, increase in blood pressure and increase in LDL levels - evidenced in the use of other contraceptives," he said. On the market potential, Mr Narayana said there was huge potential for the use of oral contraceptives in India. "In the US, oral contraception accounts for 30.6 per cent while in India, the use of pill is only 3 per cent," he said. The company expects to generate Rs 3 to 4 crore turnover out of the product during the current fiscal. The oral contraceptive market in India is valued at over Rs 90 crore.
