Hyderabad June 22 Naandi Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation promoted by Dr Reddy's Laboratories Chairman, Dr K. Anji Reddy, and Satyam Computer chief Mr Ramalinga Raju, has targeted to reach out to 20,000 villages by 2011, offering safe drinking water to the villagers. The public-private partnership with WaterHealth India helps village panchayats establish community water projects that use an ultraviolet-based technology. The technology, developed by Dr Ashok Gadgil, either kills or de-activates pathogens of all forms thereby protecting the users from all water-borne diseases. The fact that such diseases kill 1.5 million children below five years every year in the country shows the seriousness of the problem, Mr Amit Jain, National Director (Water and Sanitation) of Naandi, said. Addressing a press conference here on Friday, he said the initiative so far covered 125 villages in six districts in Andhra Pradesh. Dr Anji Reddy said the Foundation aimed at setting up 800 plants, each covering three-four villages. "We hope to cover 20,000 villages in the next four years," he said. The Foundation won a grant of Rs 3.5 crore from the World bank-supported Global Partnership on Output Based Aid for the safe water initiative. "We had to fight a tough competition to win the global bid," Mr Manoj Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of Naandi, said. Mr Sudesh Menon, CEO of WaterHealth, said the company would help Naandi to replicate the cost-effective and eco-friendly model in other States as well.
