Thiruvananthapuram June 22 The tender process for development of the proposed international container transhipment terminal at Vizhinjam, near here, will be completed this year, according to the Minister for Ports, Mr M. Vijayakumar.

Replying to questions in the State Assembly on Friday, the Minister said that as many as 43 companies, including 12 foreign ones, had taken part in the investors meet held here in April. The first phase of the project would be completed within three years, he added.

He said that Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) would conduct a feasibility study on establishing rail and road connectivity to the terminal. The study would be completed in four months.

The State Government has identified five ports in the State, apart from Vizhinjam, for development. They are Azhikkal, Alappuzha, Thangassery, Ponnani and Beypore.

The Centre has included the Azhikkal port in the National Maritime Programme. The development of the port is estimated to cost Rs 1,387 crore.

The work on the Thangassery port is nearing completion and it will be commissioned soon. At Alappuzha, the proposal is to establish a marina and a cargo port.
