Wyeth launches Tygacil

Our Bureau

New Delhi, June 22

Pharmaceutical company Wyeth Ltd introduced Tygacil, its novel intravenous antibiotic, in the Indian market on Friday. ``Our new intravenous Tygacil is the first antibiotic in a new class of glycylcyclines, which is quite effective against drug-resistant bacteria. It is mainly used in post-operative care after all other antibiotic prove to be ineffective,'' Mr R.R. Iyer, Managing Director, Wyeth, said.

The antibiotic has been introduced in over 33 countries across the world since its launch in the US two years ago. Mr Iyer, who declined to give an estimate for sales of the drug, said the market for injectible antibiotics, excluding hospitals sales, is estimated at Rs 900 crore. Each vial of Tygacil would cost about Rs 3,100. ``Our pricing should be equated with other antibiotics only in terms of dosages'' said Mr Iyer.
