Accidents Urea production may be hit at MCF for a few months Our Bureau
Mangalore June 23 The production of urea at Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF) Ltd is likely to be affected to some extent for a few months, as a portion of the cooling tower at the factory site collapsed on Saturday morning. Two senior officials of the company were killed, when they were inspecting the damaged portion of the tower. Senior executives of the company are confident that the company would make up the production loss by the end of the current fiscal. Addressing presspersons here, the Managing Director of MCF Ltd, Mr Deepak Anand, said inclement weather had been prevailing since Friday. This had resulted in a portion of a cooling tower venturi collapsing on Saturday morning. To a query if the accident would affect the bottom line of the company, he said it was too early to say about it. "I don't think there will be any significant impact. I think, the loss of production we could make up by the end of the current fiscal." There will be loss of production for two to three months, and after that the company will be able to run at higher capacity. The factory has to produce 1,150 tonnes of urea a day to meet the demands of the market. With this incident, the production is likely to come down to 900 tonnes a day. Officials at MCF said suppliers of the cooling tower had been contacted and it was likely to be restored soon. The machineries of the urea manufacturing plant were revamped in 1999-2000 at a cost of Rs 1 crore, they added.
