Letters The car's exit
The thought-provoking article "Global warming: Speed the car's exit" (Business Line, June 23) raised several interesting points. For starters, governments could check the pollution created by the existing vehicles by enforcing the following: Vehicles aged 10 years or above should not be allowed to ply on the roads 100 per cent compliance with pollution control norms should be enforced. Three-wheelers, such as auto-rickshaws or seven-seater share autos have to be checked for using adulterated fuels. Automobile industry must be encouraged to use non-conventional mixes of energy, such as in solar-powered, electric and hybrid vehicles. All departments concerned with pollution checking must be strengthened with more staff and sufficient constitutional powers. They should be able to take up the cases on their own or may act on complaints. They should also be accountable for inaction. The public should have the power to file a legal suit against the government departments for their apathy in turning a Nelson's eye to polluting industries/vehicles. Such initiatives and political will is required rather than thinking of banning cars from the roads altogether. V. K. Chakravarthy Hyderabad
