Dell gesture to deprived kids

Our Bureau

Hyderabad June 25 Dell on Monday commissioned their second computer centre in Hyderabad, and their fifth in the country, that seeks to empower children with computer skills.

The company is in the process of setting one more in the country in partnership with Crystal Home, to impart training in physics for the underprivileged children.

After inaugurating the centre in Hyderabad, the Managing Director of Dell International Services, Mr Romi Malhotra, said this is part of the corporate social responsibility drive that the Dell Foundation, based in Austin in the US, has initiated, with a mandate to empower children.

The project, named "Helping U Grow (HUG), is implemented through a partner like Hope Foundation, which takes up the task of managing such centres. A significant part of the inputs come from employees of Dell wherein they visit these centres and spare time to guide them.

"The centre has 20 Dell computers and some of the material is sourced by implementation partners such as the Hope Foundation. Since this calls for back up and support, we open such centres only in places where Dell has a presence," he explained.

For equal terms

The Chief Programme Officer, Hope Foundation, Dr Ashok Prabath, said: "Our approach has been to give these underserved students the necessary tools to compete on equal terms. We have been successful in imparting such students with basic computer education in the Dell Computer Centre."

Apart from two centres in Hyderabad, Dell has two more similar projects for underserved children managed by the Parikrama Humanity Foundation in Bangalore, and another School for The Blind in Chandigarh.
