Health States - Maharashtra Deaths due to malaria on the rise Our Bureau
Mumbai June 26 The number of malaria cases in Maharashtra shows fluctuation in the last three years. In 2004-05 there were 65,322 reported cases, which dipped to 45,614 in 2005-06 and again increased to 56,852 in 2006-07 (upto May). These are the findings of the National Vector Borne Diseases Control Programme for the State of Maharashtra. However, the number of deaths over the same period has been rising. In 2004-05 there were 59 deaths, which to increased to 104 in 2005-06 and further climbed to 133 in 2006-07.
Surveillance
The findings have also pointed out that greater Mumbai area has the highest number of malaria cases in the last two years. In 2005-06, of the total number of cases, 26 per cent were from Mumbai and it increased to 33 per cent in 2006-07. Interestingly the district of Gadchiroli, with only one per of the total population of State, reported 16 per cent of the total cases in 2005-06 and 14 per cent in 2006-07. Alarmed by high incidences of malaria and other vector borne disease in the State and especially from Municipal areas, the State Health Minister, Dr Vimaltai Mundada, called a meeting of people's representatives and health officials from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Mira-Bhayander, Kalyan-Dombivli, Bhiwandi and Thane. Corporations have decided to step up their surveillance and fogging activities. The Corporation has been asked to take stringent action against private hospitals, clinics and laboratories if they fail to report the cases to the concerned health authorities.
